Educational Testing

Educational Testing is mainly used to evaluate students after they finished the course of study. The aim is to determine whether the students understand the curricula and get the essential knowledge. Generally the exam is held by the end of the class, term or year.

Many students feel that their biggest exam is the entrance exam, the central exam that many universities use to admit the students. There are a large number of students trying to get into the university each year. It will be really crazy if each student applies to each university. Therefore, the entrance exam has been set in order to get rid of this problem. The idea is that every student takes the same test, so the university can use this test to admit the students.

However, there are many problems with the entrance exam. Due to the limited number of students admitted by the universities, the entrance exam is very highly competitive. These can cause stress and depression not only to the students, but also to their parents. Many students in Bangkok spend a lot of time taking extra tutoring courses and have less attention to their schools. This problem has been going on for many years. Recently, the Onet and Anet have been introduced. The GPAX has also been included in the admission criteria. Again, there are many problems with the Onet and Anet, still the old problem has not yet been solved.

In my point of view, it’s nothing to do with the exam, but we should focus on how to improve the quality of the schools and increase the number of universities.

A Human Being

A Human being is a kind of animals. Humans are also in a group of primates and mammals. There are some evidences indicated that humans originated from Apes. Humans do not only look like Apes, but humans also share some genetic materials with Apes. One of the differences is a human walks on two legs with the back upright. Furthermore, humans have a higher brain function for executive tasks such as calculation, abstract thinking and logical judgment.

Another aspect that makes humans unique is that we have culture. For instance, we have many written and spoken languages. Some people might argue that some animals can use their voice to communicate, but their languages are only for basic communication. Humans use languages extensively to tell a story and to express their emotions such as fear, happiness, loneliness, love, etc. Another example is that humans use many tools to complete their tasks. What makes human’s tools differ from animal’s tools is that our tools are more complex and have been designed for specific purpose. In addition, people mind is the most difficult thing to understand. Humans have “superego” or moral which has an influence on our behaviors. We do not do any actions just by our desire, but we consider whether it is a good thing or a bad thing to do.

At this point, I would say that a human is a kind of animals, but humans are very much unlike any creatures. What is your idea?

Lame Deer

After I read a story about Lame Deer, I realized about what I have learned in my psychology class. When people have a conflict or anxiety, they might find some ways to relieve or get rid of it. That is called coping style. There are many coping styles that you can choose to use in a different situation. One of those is acting out, which you might have learned from Lame Deer case.

In his childhood, he was detached from his environment and was placed in a new one; therefore, this can cause him anxiety. At first, he tried to act out by doing bad things such as gambling, drinking and doing things against the law. The turning point is that he met a woman who gave him the original peace pipe, leading to changes in his behavior. After that, he turned his anxiety into proper ways. For example, he became a wichasha wakan ( medicine man, or holy man) and wrote Lame Deer, Seeker of Visions in 1972. By doing so, he has made a contribution to our society.

In my point of view, I do hope that people can realize and turn their anxiety into something that can help this world getting better.

Do you believe in magic?

Anyone in this world could have problems in sometime of one's life. Have you ever been depressed or ever had any bad period of time? If so, what would you do when you feel that things are out of you control?

Magic is something that people try to use in order to control events by calling spirits, secrets forces, etc. Those who believe in magic think that magic has a power of success.

As for me, I don't really agree with the idea. I prefer to do things by myself because I think there has to be a cause for something to happen. For example, you won't pass the exam, if you don't study enough,...or unless your friend pass you his/her answer sheet, right?

How is your opinion? Do you believe in magic?

Lucky and Unlucky Signs

Hi Everyone,

Welcome to Joycezzspace.
It's our second day in this AEP class, April-May 2007. In our class today, I had an opportunity to interview Ann about her opinion towards some lucky and unlucky signs. She states that she believes in some of them. For example, when she sees a black cat walking across the road, she feels that some bad things might happen and that makes her avoid getting close to any black cats.

Although she doesn't have any good luck charm with her, she convince in doing a certain manner to help her lucky. She also told me that everytime she walks into the examination room, she would walk into the room with her right leg. This could help her to be more confident and do the exam very well.

How about you? Do you have any idea with some lucky and unlucky signs?
